Beer Review: Troegs Flying Mouflan
Here at Daddy's Sugar Ball we're honored to add a new contributor to our stable of writers, Natty Bo Jackson. Natty Bo will be bringing his extensive knowledge and experience drinking beer with him as he posts tons of beer reviews for us along with pretty much anything else he wants. Please welcome him with open arms and an open tab at the DSB bar.

Tröegs Flying Mouflan
Brewery: Tröeg's Brewing Company
Style: Barleywine
ABV: 9.3%
Appearance: Pours an awesome garnet/molasses color. A nice reddish cloudiness that is consistent throughout. A few sips leaves a little lacing in the class. Tannish or nut colored head that remains with a tad on top of every sip. A true beer beauty.
Smell: Smells of a hint of chocolate or roasted malt. Hops are non-existent. Caramel comes through with just a hint of citrus. The smell is absolutely fantastic.
Taste: Has a distinct caramel flavor with a touch of citrus that pokes through. A hoppy flavor becomes apparent that wasn’t noted in the smell. Actually tastes more hoppy than I would have expected. Alcohol comes out as the glass warms…this is a good thing. It has a great three-way balance to it that is truly an awesome experience.
Mouthfeel: Smooth with a slight hop bite to it. Alcohol warms the palate as consumption continues. Some slight bitterness on the back of the tongue mixed with a sweetness on the front.
Drinkability: Although I am completely in love with this brew, I have to give a warning: at 9.3%, this is not a brew to be taken lightly. Definitely not a session brew. One or two max and then move on, or simply use this one to complete the evening.
Overall: Truly awesome. Some have referred to it as “Nugget Nectar on steroids”. I can agree to an extent, but I think there is much more to it than that. More complex than a Nugget Nectar clone. Has the makings of a true classic brew. Almost has a “Christmas eve” feel to it. Highly recommended.
Thanks for coming and suckling Daddy's Sugar Ball...
