The Thinker: Five Thoughts on the NFL's Week 3
Mercury Morris Already Has the Champagne Chilled After tonight's MNF game between the Bears and Packers, the NFL will have only three teams remaining undefeated after a mere three weeks. The Steelers have used an overwhelming defense and ball-control offense while winning their first three games with Dennis Dixon and Chaz Batch starting until McRapey returns in Week 6. No matter how surprising that is, it can't compare to the Kansas City Chiefs still without a loss on their record. Sure, they've been the benefactors of an easier early schedule but the emergence of Jamaal Charles and the addition of Dexter McCluster has given them some potent weapons on the offensive side of the ball. The team might be really dangerous when head coach Todd Haley decides Charles is worthy of more than 11 touches a game.
Bros Icing Bros With two minutes remaining in overtime, the potential 41-yard game-winning FG from the Falcons' Matt Bryant was blocked when the Saints' defensive line broke through and got a hand on the kick. However, Saints' head coach Sean Payton had called a timeout right before the snap and the play didn't count. After a holding penalty pushed them back 5 more yards, Bryant nailed the 46-yarder to send the Saints to their first loss and the Falcons to a tie for first place in the NFC South.
Tom Coughlin's Ass Must be Getting Warm The New York Giants' head coach has to be on the hot seat after the team's last two performances against the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans. For a team under a taskmaster like Coughlin, the Giants have become uncharacteristically and increasingly undisciplined. In yesterday's game, the Giants turned the ball over three times and committed 11 penalties while losing 29-10 after being tied at halftime. The NFC East is open for the taking and Coughlin needs to right the ship to save the G-Men's season and his job.
Norv Turner is No Rain Man The only offense the Seahawks generated in the second half came when Leon Washington returned the opening kickoff 101 yards to put Seattle up 17-0. After that, the scoring was almost all San Diego as Marmalard passed for a total of 455 yards and brought the Chargers back to tie the game up at 20 with 6:39 remaining in the game. So, what does Norv Turner do? That's right...kicks off directly to Washington who returns this one 99 yards to give the 'Hawks a lead they would never relinquish.
Thanks for coming and suckling Daddy's Sugar Ball...
