Today in Central PA Sports History - 1978

August 1, 1978

On this date thirty-two years ago, Lancaster native and Elizabethtown College graduate Gene Garber struck out Pete Rose in the 9th inning to end his hitting streak at a NL record-tying 44 games.  After the game, Rose was not pleased with Garber's approach to the at-bat and treating the situation "like it was the ninth inning of the 7th game of the World Series".  Rose also voiced his displeasure with the Braves' pitchers for not challenging him, "Phil Niekro would have given me a fastball to hit."

Garber had to rely on his best pitch, the changeup, after he ran the count to 2-1 on Rose.   "I was scared to death that I might walk Pete Rose to end his streak," says Garber.  "My knees were shaking."  He delivered the final two pitches with his typical but unconventional sidearm delivery to end the streak and the game.

Thanks for coming and suckling Daddy's Sugar Ball...
