Today in Central PA Sports History - 1991

July 27, 1991

On this date nineteen years ago, Stan Jones was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Jones was born in Altoona, but moved and grew up in Lemoyne after his father's job was transferred to the midstate area. Although a unanimous All-American and the Knute Rockne Memorial Trophy Award winner (as the nation's outstanding lineman) in his senior year at Maryland, Jones was only drafted in the fifth round by the Chicago Bears.

Jones began his career in 1954 as an offensive tackle before switching to guard for the next eight seasons. In 1962, Jones played both ways to help the defense and one year later made the switch permanently to defensive tackle. Jones is often credited as the first professional player to rely on weight training for football conditioning and was the key to his success on both sides of the ball. Jones' season of 1966 was his only one outside of Chicago as he asked to be traded to the Washington Redskins to play his final season closer to his home.

Jones was an All-NFL guard in four seasons and played in seven straight Pro Bowls. After his playing career ended, Jones coached over twenty years in the NFL.

Thanks for coming and suckling Daddy's Sugar Ball...
