Today in Central PA Sports History - 1938
June 28, 1938

Seventy-two years ago today, the governors of the seven active teams in the International and Can-Am Hockey Leagues met in New York City and the International-American Hockey League was created by the formal merger of the two associations. The two-time defending EAHL champion Hershey Bears were added as the eighth and final member of the newly formed league which was renamed and known since 1940 as the American Hockey League. Although three other original cities are still represented in the AHL today, the Bears are the only franchise to have played in the league without interruption since the inaugural 1938-1939 season.
