Pennlive drops the ball on Opening Day
Opening day brings much anticipation and excitement to ballplayers at any level. Dial that emotion up even further when your fanbase is reinvigorated by ballpark renovations and the future of the franchise on the roster. Last night brought the home debut of this year's Harrisburg Senators and the unveiling of the revamped Metro Bank Park on City Island in front of an enthusiastic turnout.
But no where on the front page can we see who won the game. And it's not like they are limited on space. Under the Sports heading on the homepage, we can see that the Big Springs Bulldogs finally beat the Waynesboro Maidens in high school softball. We also can find the latest clue in a serial contest about the wild things and wild places of Pennsylvania (today's clue was: moist, deciduous woodlands). But no where can we see who won the game. It isn't until we click through to the Sports menu and scroll down (really down) that we find Geoff Morrow's excellent game report. Can I understand burying the score if they continued their losing ways in an unexciting blowout? Sure. But the Senators scored twice in the bottom of the 9th inning to win only their second game so far in this young season. And since the Senators' fans and the Senators themselves deserve better treatment from whoever's making decisions over at Pennlive, I'm going to have to deliver you the headline like they should have. SENATORS DELIVER DRAMATIC WALKOFF WIN, 6-5, IN HOME OPENER How tough would that have been? Thanks for coming and suckling Daddy's Sugar Ball...
Even in these tough economic times, it became necessary for the city of Harrisburg and the ballclub to make changes to the increasingly outdated Senators' home. Any serious ballpark (especially at the Double-A level) could not continue with the metal bleachers and shoddy clubhouses. Last year we got a small taste of the changes as the boardwalk was built out around the outfield wall and the video board was upgraded to something pretty fantastic.
So, the unveiling of the new ballpark and its massive improvements is obviously a big freaking deal. But for most of the morning and afternoon today if you went out to Pennlive.com (our local internet gateway to the Patriot-News) you wouldn't even know they also played a baseball game there last night too. On the website's front page we can:

Hey dude, you are such a baseball fan! I love reading your blog, and I'm getting addicted to baseball now. Keep it up.
