Today in Central PA Sports History - 1947

April 15, 1947

On this date sixty-three years ago, the Hershey Bears shutout the Pittsburgh Hornets, 5-0, at the Hersheypark Arena to win their first ever Calder Cup championship. 8,605 rabid fans were in attendance to watch the Bears top the Hornets in the historic and deciding seventh game of the series.

After posting a shutout in the opening game, the Bears lost the next three games to fall behind 3-1 in the series.  With their backs against the wall goalie Red Henry shutout the Hornets in Game 5 in Hershey, won 2-1 in Game 6 to hand the Hornets their first home loss since January 4th, and set a playoff record with his third series shutout in the deciding Game 7.

Thanks for coming and suckling Daddy's Sugar Ball...
