Today in Central PA Sports History - 1987

April 11, 1987

On this date twenty-three years ago today, the Harrisburg Senators marked their return to baseball by playing their first game at City Island's new RiverSide Stadium. Gone since 1952, the Senators officially returned to the AA Eastern League against the Vermont Reds in an opening day loss, 11-5.

Five months later, the Senators would defeat those same Vermont Reds to claim the first of their six Eastern League titles since their return. Originally a Pittsburgh Pirate farm team, the club would become the Montreal Expos' AA team in 1991 in an affiliation that continues under the Washington Nationals to this day.

Thanks for coming and suckling Daddy's Sugar Ball...
