Today in Central PA Sports History - 2007

March 22, 2007

Three years ago today, Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics announced the resignation of longtime women's head basketball coach Rene Portland. Portland compiled over 600 wins, a Final Four appearance, and multiple Coach of the Year awards during her tenure at Penn State. But her legacy will not be for her success on the basketball court, instead she'll be remembered for her anti-gay policies and bullying tactics.

In 2006, former player Jennifer Harris accused Portland of removing her from the team because of her perceived sexual orientation. An internal university review found that Portland created a "hostile, intimidating, and offensive environment" based on Harris's perceived sexual orientation. Due to the high profile of the accusation, other former Lady Lions came forward alleging that Portland had discriminated against them on the basis of sexual orientation as well.

After the internal review, the University fined Portland $10,000, required her to attend diversity training sessions, and placed her on "zero tolerance" for future violations of the nondiscrimination policy. Portland sealed her fate when she attacked the investigative process and refused to admit responsibility for her actions.

Thanks for coming and suckling Daddy's Sugar Ball...
