Today in Central PA Sports History - 1931

Welcome to a new feature here at DSB...we can't promise we'll have one of these every day, but we hope when we do post them that you'll find them informative and fun.

February 18, 1931

The great, rich tradition of hockey in Hershey began on this day 79 years ago as two amatuer teams, the Pennsylvania Athletic Club (Penn A.C.) and Villanova, played in the first formal hockey game ever played in the town. They squared off against each other before a crowd of 250 in the 1,900-seat Hershey Ice Palace which was located inside the Hershey Convention Hall.

Convention Hall, a classic quadrispired building, was built in 1915 and still stands proudly next to the Hershey Arena. An ice plant and rink were installed inside in early 1931 with rink dimensions of 60 feet by 170 feet. Indoor rinks were rare during the Great Depression, so the facility attracted teams from all over Pennsylvania. Besides hockey, the Palace was also used for public skating and an annual ice carnival.
