The Weekend That Will Be... Bearcat is back!

Welcome back to The Weekend That Will Be where I, Bearcat, give you all the information you need for the coming few days so that you can focus on what is really important: avoiding your family, sexting pictures of yourself and drinking until you are black out drunk.  Lots of stuff to cover, so let’s get right to it…

The Box Office:

Come see her movie and Kristen Bell will kiss you...

After a long hiatus due to an expletive and alcohol-fueled anti-Semetic rant with some police officers, Mel Gibson is back.  We here at DSB could not be more excited for a film than we are for Edge of Darkness.  This one is right up our alley.  Tough guy detective watches as his only daughter is gunned down and then dies in his arms.  He turns in his badge and gun and starts hunting down the men who killed his daughter working outside of the laws he once enforced.  I am 100% sure that Mel spends the entire movie just getting more pissed off in every scene.  Kind of like Taken but with more punches to the face.  Edge of Darkness is directed by Martin Campbell who brought us James Bond’s Casino Royale and Golden Eye. This is going to be an awesome movie.  It is highly recommended by all of us here at DSB.

Only one other movie is coming out today for wide release and that is the Kristen Bell chick flick, When in Rome.  Kristen Bell is really hot, but not hot enough to make me sit through this one.  Mrs. Bearcat has already been hinting at this for a date night movie and justified the pick because Kristen Bell was in Forgetting Sarah Marshall “and I know you liked that movie.”  Shoot me in the taint.  That would be better than sitting through this crap.

Prediction:  Can Avatar win the weekend again?  I am betting against it yet.  Edge of Darkness number two, When in Rome picks up third.

Cars:

Look at the curves on that one...

Yesterday was the start of the Central PA Auto Show down at the PA Farm Show Complex.  Since I was a little kid, I would always go to see the car show.  I love cars.  I especially love new cars.  The fresh gleaming paint, the supple leather, that intoxicating new car smell...it is all so inviting.  It is especially fun opening all the compartments in these cars and trying to determine what size gun they would hold.  “Damn the center console of this Benz could hold an AK-47! I want one.”  If you plan on heading out, here is all the info you will need.

Prediction:  Here are a couple of the cars that you should be excited to see.  Cadillac CTS-V Coupe, Mercedes-Benz E-Series Coupe, BMW 7 Series, Audi A8 (it has a more gizmos than NASA) and the new Mustang with a 5.0 V8

College Basketball:

#7 Duke at #11 Georgetown (Saturday 1:00 CBS)
Duke is taking to the road in a huge ACC vs. Big East match up against the 15-4 Georgetown Hoyas.  Georgetown is coming off a disappointing loss to #4 Syracuse on Monday and is looking to bounce back with a big win.  The Duke Blue Devils started 13-1 and have settled in at a respectable 17-3 and second place in the ACC.  Duke has the better shooters in this game, but I have to believe in the defense of Georgetown. This game will be really close but an important question is who's cheerleaders are lower on the scale?
Duke or Georgetown?

Prediction:
Max Power (diehard Duke fan) will not be watching since he has not watched one minute of Duke basketball since he paid for a ticket to see them play and beat the snot out of Gonzaga 76-41 way back in December. My dad would kill me if I picked against Georgetown so I have to take the Hoyas 63-Duke 58

#23 Vanderbilt at #1 Kentucky (Saturday 4:00pm ESPN)
Kentucky must have really enjoyed that day they were ranked number one in the country.  It must have been a fantastic couple of hours. Now they welcome the Vanderbilt Commodores for a Saturday afternoon beat down.  I don’t know what the line is but I would give the points.  Calipari did one of two things after getting knocked off on Tuesday by the Gamecocks… either he upped the players' salaries so that they could focus more on practice or he instituted a pay for performance system.  Either way the Wildcats are going to crush Vanderbilt.

Prediction:
UK by 33 points

#3 Kansas at #13 Kansas State (Saturday 7:00pm ESPN)
This is going to be a fun game to watch.  The crowd will be whipped up into a fury at the prospect of beating not only a #3 ranked team, but also the in-state and Big 12 Conference rival Kansas Jayhawks at home.  Kansas State sits in third place in the Big 12.  They barely got past an unranked Baylor team on Tuesday but the players might have been scared at the prospect of being shot and killed by one of the Bears' players.

Prediction:
Rock Chalk Jayhawk’s sulk after this one. Kansas State by five

Pro Bowl:

Pro Bowl cheerleaders... the only reason I would ever watch the NFL Pro Bowl

Prediction:  I won’t be watching and neither will you. NFC by a touchdown.

Hockey:

We once again welcome the man who always picks the home team and DSB's hockey guru, Plain White TS, to break down the upcoming games for Central PA hockey fans...

B-E-A-R-S Bears, Bears, Bears, Whoooo!!!!:  The boys of “The Chocolate and White” look to continue their dominance of the AHL this weekend.  After destroying the Moose from Manitoba last weekend, 8-3 and 8-2, they look towards a trio of games on hand.  Friday, they will be taking the bus up 81 and into WB/Scranton to meet with the “Baby Birds”.  You can always expect a good game here as tempers will flare and blood will boil.  Upon conclusion of Friday’s match-up, the boys head home and welcome two teams from New York to the Giant Center: the Albany River Rats on Saturday and the Binghamton Senators on Sunday.  Looking back at previous games between each of these teams, we see Hershey coming out on top against all.  Not only did they beat each team, but in the combined three games they managed to stuff the net with twenty-two goals. Yeah, that was not a typo...22.  Ten of those goals alone came against Albany two weeks ago.  One would look to see those guys hitting the ice in need of some payback.  Not me though.  With Hershey now standing at 15 straight wins at home, I’m sure they are only looking to make that number grow.  Expect to see some action packed hockey in “Chocolatetown” this weekend as your Hershey Bears roll on.

Special Note:  If you haven’t had the chance yet, be sure to check out
John Walton Hockey and read the write-up about Bears fan Jason Hartle.  Definitely a heartfelt story worth reading and this Bears fan can’t wait to see the outcome.

Predictions:
The Bears will remain unbeatable, taking all three games.  Jason Hartle gets a real eye-opener as to what being part of Bear Nation really means.

Washington Capitals:  Bearcat can complain all he wants, but is there a hotter team in the NHL right now than the Caps? (Ed. Note: Fuck the Caps...and no there is not)  Not only is this team on a winning roll, but they are firing in goals left and right.  Since Ovechkin has been wearing the C, the Caps are 11-1-0 winning nine of those games by more than one goal.  Bearcat expects it all to crap out before the playoffs, I beg to differ brother, but only time will tell. (Ed. Note #2: Caps will lose in the second round)  Onto the games for the weekend…The Caps have a set of games this weekend: Friday they will face the Florida Panthers, and Sunday they will meet the Tampa Bay Lightning.  Both games for the Caps are at home.  Looking back at the stats against both of these teams, the Caps have seen Florida four times and Tampa Bay only two so far this season.  They have beaten the Panthers in all four, and split the set with the Lightning.  Both of these teams are a ways down in the league standings, looking to climb back near daylight again.  I would not expect to see that start this weekend in Washington though.

Prediction:
The Capitals continue to crush their opponents.  Another weekend of wins in “The Phone-Booth”.

Pittsburgh Penguins:  The Penguins have a couple of days to recoup after a dismal loss Thursday evening to the Ottawa Senators.  They will play only one game this weekend Sunday at home where they will face the Detroit Red Wings.  This will be the second meeting of three for these two teams.  Detroit managed to manhandle the Pens in the first meeting 4-1. The Motorheads from Hockeytown seem to have finally lost the dominating luster they had in the past.  They are currently floating in the middle of the league as standings go and head to Western Pa after facing the Nashville Predators this evening.  I would not expect to see much of a challenge here for the Pens.

Prediction:
“Bearcat’s Birds” win another one.  Such a shame, I don’t know which one of the teams I hate more.  Yeah, I do…

Philadelphia Flyers:  The Flyers head into the weekend with only one game - - Saturday at home where they welcome the New York Islanders.  Philly’s trend of weak play has been pretty consistent this month...lose two, win four, lose two, win three, and back to the lose two again.  Guess that means I should I throw stats for the teams out the window and just expect them to win.  Not likely, but we’ll still take a look.  This is the third meeting of five for these teams and Philly has taken both games so far.  On top of that, New York comes into the weekend riding a four game losing streak.  I guess the Flyers winning equation may look to work this weekend. (Ed. Note #3: Fuck the Caps, but really fuck the Flyers more)

Prediction:
Flyers look to head back into the win column, getting a W at home.

Podcasting:

Now I just plug this blue wire into the diverter box's
HiFi supplemental power retainer plug and this thing should work...

Max Power, ZJ, Spintrick, and myself will be barricading ourselves up in the ZJ Compound with pizza and massive amounts of beer to record our sixth podcast.  We are currently taking suggestions for a title.  Expect to hear about the upcoming Super Bowl, College Basketball, and beer.

Predictions:

  • In his triumphant return to the podcast, Spintrick brings the wood and delivers four HEY-Ohhh moments
  • Max Power will drink too many John Daly’s and spend half the podcast emptying his bladder
  • ZJ will begin actually washing himself in Hopslam around hour three
  • Bearcat will fuck up the intro and closing of the podcast…again.

Quick shout out: If you are looking for stuff to do in and around Harrisburg this weekend don’t pass up reading Sara Bozich's Weekend Round Up

Thanks for coming and suckling on Daddy’s Sugar Ball…

For the record, I am NOT highly recommending Edge of Darkness. Also, I propose we call this podcast "One for the Other Thumb."
