The Weekend That Was...NFL Coaches Edition

Jim Zorn - In the wee hours of Monday morning, Zorn was finally fired as Redskins' coach after weeks of speculation. Zorn was the company man to the end even after his playcalling duties were given to a former bingo caller in Week 7. Zorn is thoughtful and intelligent and I think would do okay if he were to get an assistant coach position, but right now is he not head coaching material. Early word out of DC has former Broncos' coach Mike Shanahan assembling a staff for his apparent hiring. I'm willing to bet that's not going to end well either.

Wade Phillips - On the other end of the NFC East spectrum is the Cowboys' Wade Phillips who may have saved his job by orchestrating a late season turnaround and winning the NFC East title. Don't get me wrong - - if Dallas is bounced next Saturday night by the Eagles then all bets are off. The Cowboys are suddenly everyone's sexy pick to make a Super Bowl run and we all know Jerry Jones would cream his shorts at that thought, but Tony Romo and Phillips need to prove their playoff capabilities to the naysayers.
Bill Belichick - On the road in Houston with only playoff seeding to play for, Belichick will come under fire for having Wes Welker on the field long enough for the NFL's leading pass catcher to tear his ACL and MCL. After a week where more airtime on ESPN (radio and TV) went to
Eric Mangini - Our friends over at Cleveland Frowns have been one of the first to trumpet the work and turanround that has taken place in Cleveland. Sure, the Brownies are still cellar dwellers in the AFC North but they just won their last four in a row and you can clearly see progress is being made. New team president Mike Holmgren is still undecided if he will retain Mangini, but I think Mangini has earned the right to see his plan through to the end...or at least for another year.
Rex Ryan - Last year, both #6 seeds reached their conference title games so I understand that the goal of any team is to just get into the playoffs and something special may happen. But Rex Ryan seems a little too pleased and giddy with himself for leading the Jets to the playoffs when they only needed to play a 14 game schedule. The last two weeks both the the Colts and Bengals have laid down and allowed the Jets to slide into the playoffs. I'm not saying they're not a better team than the Bengals or that they won't win next Saturday against them in a rematch of the week 17 contest, but stop acting like you pulled off something miraculous to get in. Now that the playoffs are starting, teams aren't going to lay down regardless of how much begging you do.Thanks for coming and suckling Daddy's Sugar Ball...

Just thought I would some news from my new home. I heard on the radio today that newly hired GM of the Buffalo Bills, fired damn near everyone. Guess they are going to try and start with a clean slate.
