Central PA Sports Bars: The FieldHouse
During the course of the NFL season, DSB will walk you through the best and worst places in Central PA to catch all of the games on a Sunday afternoon. Every week we will be reviewing where the DSB editors (and various guest stars) spent the better part of our day. We will be judging the locations on four criteria with a 1 (bad) to 10 (great) scale for each. Hopefully, this will help our loyal local readers find the best places to spend your Sunday afternoons.
If there are any restaurateurs or bar managers out there interested in their establishment appearing here, please contact us at EditorsDSB@gmail.com.
This week's cast of characters: ZJ, PJ, Plain White TS, Johnny D, and Max Power.
This week we found ourselves travelling down I-83 until we got to The FieldHouse, the All American Sports Bar located in Etters and occupying the spot that used to be KClingers and for a brief time Kokomo’s.
TVs/View: 6
The FieldHouse has large TVs lining the outside of the dining room and small televisions at each individual booth. There are also a plethora of TVs behind the crowded bar area for a great variety of channel choices. In the dining room, it proved a little difficult however in trying to arrange the specific games so that everyone was happy. Given the layout of the room, I’m not sure though how to improve the viewing experience (other than the typical manswer of adding more screens).
Beer: 9
The FieldHouse has an extensive selection of draft beers (30 on tap) and they include many IPAs and specialty breweries. For those that want the “usual”, they also have Sunday specials of Coors Light in pints and pitchers. Around halftime we noticed an advertisement for an everyday special of a bucket of five Miller High Life bottles (regular, not pony) for $8. Offering us a deal we couldn’t refuse, our table enjoyed the Champagne of Beers from that point on.
Food: 9
The food at the FieldHouse was great as we were pleased by everything we ordered. We initially stated out working the appetizer portion of the menu (nachos, onion rings, broccoli cheese bites) and moved into something more substantial later (wings and pizza). The fries and onion rings were fried to a perfect crisp and the white pizza incorporated some delicate seasonings that were a welcome combination. The wings were juicy, tender and earned huge bonus points for still carrying Kokomo’s sauces like Cautious Beauty and Coach’s Choice.
Other/Miscellaneous: 4
Loyal readers will know our disapproval for sports bars that don’t have Wi-Fi, and the FieldHouse is no exception. Normally this wouldn't affect iPhone or Blackberry users, however inside the restaurant is a virtual dead zone for cellular coverage. Last week they were also shorthanded on the wait staff, but everyone pitched in and made our experience as smooth as possible for our food and drink orders.
Overall: 28 out of 40
Located halfway to York from Harrisburg, the drive may be an issue for some potential customers but based on the quality of the food and selection of beers we advise you to seek out The FieldHouse for Sunday football and throughout the week.
Scorecards to Date (out of 40):
