Central PA Sports Bars: Arooga's 15
During the course of the NFL season, DSB will walk you through the best and worst places in Central PA to catch all of the games on a Sunday afternoon. Every week we will be reviewing where the DSB editors (and various guest stars) spent the better part of our day. We will be judging the locations on four criteria with a 1 (bad) to 10 (great) scale for each. Hopefully, this will help our loyal local readers find the best places to spend your Sunday afternoons.
If there are any restaurateurs or bar managers out there interested in their establishment appearing here, please contact us at EditorsDSB@gmail.com.
This week's cast of characters: Bearcat, ZJ, Spintrick, Max Power, Plain White TS, PJ and special guest The Princess.
This week we hit up an old standby for our Sunday football viewing, Arooga's 15 located in Camp Hill. A little over a year ago, Arooga's transformed the location that previously housed Dorado and Ground Round into a mecca for the sports watching fanatics in the Central PA area.
TVs/View: 12
I realize the scale is supposed to only go to 10…but that would sell Arooga’s short. Rows and rows of TVs are viewable from every possible seat. If you asked any self-respecting guy to plan how his ultimate sports bar would be laid out, this would be it. They offer over one hundred televisions located throughout the bar & dining room areas. Hell, they even have mini-TVs above the urinals in the restrooms too.
Beer: 7
Arooga's has an extensive selection of draft beers and bottles. They pride themselves in how cold their beer coolers are kept and as you enter the restaurant you can see what temperature the beer is currently at (like 29.2). The specialty drafts are a little pricey (Sam Adams’ Cherry Wheat was $4.50)...so our suggestion would be to get pitchers of the standard fare (like Miller Lite, Yuengling Lager, etc).
Food: 5
Here is the weak link for Arooga's...they serve a typical bar menu, but the food that comes out of their kitchen is very inconsistent. One week the wings will be the best you've ever had, the next you wonder if they gave you the wrong order. One of the best things that we can recommend is the pulled pork (available on their sliders, fries, potato skins, nachos, and sandwedges). However this week, our table ate an order of nachos and the meat and sauce weren't even mixed before being placed on the chips. Is it a matter of handling the rush? Is it just a question of quality level regardless of the time of day? However, one item that has never disappointed us and that we highly recommend is the Baked Potato Soup.
Other/Miscellaneous: 8
Arooga’s has been a trendsetter as one of the first in the area to offer free wifi which is much appreciated by the DSB crew. They also offer trivia games, networked poker games, Wii and live bands. There is a always a lively crowd for football games and all "big" sporting events for that matter. And for those readers who are concerned for the environment, Arooga’s is also now a certified green restaurant
Overall: 32 out of 40
Since opening, Arooga’s has been the gold standard for sports bars in the area and little has changed since then. There are definite areas for improvement and most of them all stem from the food. But if you’re not expecting a three star Michelin restaurant, this is the place to watch your Sunday football.
Thanks for coming and suckling Daddy's Sugar Ball...
